Does your website have a 404 page?

Do you know what a 404 page is?

A 404 page is a page that appears when a website visitor tries to access a webpage that doesn’t exist or was removed. The webpage will display the message “404 – page not found” and will often include links to popular pages on the site as well as links to other sites.

Sometimes you'll even find a humorous 404 page on a website - just gives you a smile for the day! Here's one to view - https://miniwebs.com.au/ha%20ha%20ha/

These pages can be frustrating for both customers and website managers, so it's important to keep them as minimal as possible.

The most common causes of 404 errors are:

  • A mistyped URL (either by the user or through some other software)
  • An outdated link on another website where redirects to another URL
  • The URL was deleted by the owner of the site, for example, because they updated their site and deleted old content
  • A website requires you to log in before accessing some pages, but you failed to do

How to check your website 404 page - simply visit your website and add something odd at the end of the URL - eg mydomain.com.au/weirdstuff (swap out mydomain.com.au though)

This should reach your supposed 404 pages.
